The termite seasons are the ones the Australian Museum names and the tick months are the ones the Australian Government’s health advice gives (both below); neither is read from the weather.

Rain that rises and falls by turns until August

At Avalon Airport, the rain from March to August rises and falls by turns. March is the driest month at 26 mm, then April is wetter, May drier, June wetter, July drier and August wetter again. Spring then holds the rain at its highest, with November the wettest month at 52 mm, before December turns drier.

At the station, the days warm every month from August to January and cool every month from March to June. January and February share the warmest days, and June and July the coolest. The nights start to warm a month after the days, rising every month from September to January, and July's nights are the coldest, averaging 5.3°C.

An autumn that starts with the driest month

Autumn at the station opens with March, the driest month, and then April brings 42 mm, more than March or May on either side. Its days cool every month. Spring is the wetter season, with 144 mm to autumn's 100 mm. September and October have the same rainfall, and the days warm every month through to November.

Pests and weather, from public sources

Termites

New colonies begin when winged termites leave the nest in a colonising flight. The Australian Museum says these flights happen in warm, humid weather, mostly in spring and autumn.

Cockroaches

The Better Health Channel says cockroaches do best where conditions are warm, humid and unhygienic.

Mosquitoes

“Mosquitoes need water to breed, and some mosquitoes can breed in very small amounts of water.”

Ticks

Ticks can be found in any month. The Australian Government’s health advice puts the usual tick season at July to December, and says it differs from place to place.
